Designed to turn over soil and loosen the ground ready for planting, tillers are typically push-along machines, with a rotating cultivator head to move the soil. This is equipped with multiple sharp curved tines at the base of a hand held shaft, often with handlebars.
Available both as petrol and electric powered machines, electric versions tend to be more compact and lightweight, often folding in half for ease of storage or transportation. With a working width and depth of around 10 inches, tillers can be used even in tight corners, cutting through tangled weeds, compacted soil and hardened sod with ease.
