Rotavators and cultivators are very similar machines, designed to turn over compacted soil or turn in mulches and manure, making land ready for landscaping or planting. These are typically push-along machines, with a rotating head equipped with multiple sharp tines at the base of a hand held shaft, often with handlebars.
Powered rotavators can penetrate soil up to a depth of around 6-8 inches, taking a lot of the hard work out of breaking it up, and greatly improving the air content. A useful tip is to only rotavate after weeding has been completed, otherwise you could end up spreading the weeds instead of eliminating them.
