Like all living things, lawns need to breathe. When they become compacted through heavy use or poor drainage, the soil's 'pore size' shrinks, the grass roots can no longer go deep enough for healthy top growth and thatch develops. Aeration can be done using hand tools, but it can be hard work over large areas.

Healthy Grass Airing Techniques

The solution could be a powered or professional lawn aerator. Using hollow tines or spoons mounted on a central, rotating drum, they punch out plugs of earth or 'cores' of ½ to ¾ inch diameters at regular intervals of a few inches, no matter how compacted the soil, allowing air and nutrients to penetrate once again.
