Electric rotary mowers are extremely popular and can be ideal all-purpose models. The grass is cut by a rotating horizontal blade, and with built in rear rollers the classic striped lawn effect can be easily achieved - the higher the 'tip' speed (the speed of rotation relative to speed of forward motion) the more efficient the cut.

Some models have additional blades that mulch the cuttings and spread them on the lawn as you cut, making fertilisers unnecessary. Others have collecting boxes so you decide how to deal with the cuttings. Cable models will need to be used within reach of a power source, and all models have built-in safety features, such as cutting off the motor in case the blades come into contact with the cord. Rechargeable cordless mowers will give you greater flexibility.
