There is a vast array of mig welding machines available for the home workshop, for the professional garage and body shop, and also for use in manufacturing industries. MIG - or Metal Inert Gas - welding is a partly automated welding technique with modern MIG welders coming as a complete unit, ready to go. The choice of MIG welder depends on the precise application: small welding jobs on a typical car with thin chassis panels are possible with a small MIG welding unit, but older and more robust vehicles need a more powerful machine.
Small, compact, and lightweight, MIG welders use flux-coated welding wire, and have a 13 amp 240V power supply with thermal overload protection. Models for the home workshop weight as little as 12 kg and can be easily transported. At the top end of the professional range, high-tech MIG welding machines costing around £2000 are capable of holding a constant arc length, enabling a professional car body shop to perform all welding operations with complete control.
