Generally speaking, corded trimmers are recommended for small garden spaces, whist petrol or battery operated models are more suited to large gardens, difficult to access areas or professional duties.

Trimmer Buying & Maintenance Tips

Grass trimmers work by cutting tough vegetation using a nylon cord or cords, rotated at great speed. The longer the cord, the wider the swathe you will cut, and the quicker the trimming will take. Some trimmers feature an edging capability, meaning lawn edging and borders can be neatly finished off.

The nylon cord can - and will - wear down or break in time. The cord can be replaced by simply pulling the desired amount of fresh cord from the integral cord spool. Some trimmers use a line feed system, which replaces damaged cord automatically, but to prevent the cord wearing too quickly, avoid hard impact surfaces while the motor's running, such as paving or dry earth.

Choosing the right balance

Pay attention to ergonomics when considering your purchase, as different models have different handling characteristics. Choose a trimmer that feels right for you. Good balance and weight is important.

• Always wear protective gear such as sturdy shoes and goggles when using trimmers.
• When using corded trimmers outdoors, remember to use an RCD plug-in safety adapter.
