Hedgecutters come in three power options: petrol, corded electric and cordless electric. They have double-sided and sometimes single-sided blades for specialist applications.
Petrol powered models are highly maneuverable and have far greater power than the other two choices. There are sacrifices in that petrol powered models are much louder and do not posses the pollution-free benefits of the electric models. Electric models are guaranteed a fuss-free start up and a cordless electric model has no real restrictions other than the power output.
Battery technology has improved considerably over the last decade and today's heavy-duty rechargeable cells can hold more power for longer periods of time with less long-term decay. However, even the best batteries in the world don't last forever and this is worth bearing in mind when you are considering buying a hedgecutter. If you intend to use your cutter occasionally for light work, then a corded or indeed a cordless cutter will be more than sufficient for your needs. Cordless cutters can slice through branches 3/8" thick so it's useful to keep some pruners handy for anything thicker. Remember, the higher the wattage output of your machine, the more powerful it will be, so consider what kind of work you need to do and how regularly it will need to be done.
If you are a professional working in big gardens or parkland and your job entails lots of hedge work, cutting branches up to ½" in diameter, then your obvious choice would be to opt for a petrol-powered machine.
Electric hedgecutters start at around £30 for a basic model and tend to peak at the £300 mark. Cordless models start at around £50 up to £80, whilst the petrol-powered machines bear professional-use price tags, starting at £120 and rising close to the £400 mark for heavy-duty, specialist models.
If you're an occasional user and are looking to purchase a corded electric saw, then look for one which is comfortable to hold. A practical weight coupled with good ergonomics means less fatigue for the user.
Important safety features to look out for when buying a corded cutter is a good quality, shielded cable with a practical length - usually 12 meters is sufficient. A blade brake will stop the blade within one second, greatly reducing the risk of injury, and a hand guard with two hand switching is also a good safety option. A rotating handle enables greater reach if you job demands extra height or tight areas.
Remember - if you're unsure about what blade length you will require for the job in hand, World of Power sales advice team will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
