After seeking advice from the Energy Saving Trust, and based on worrying statistics issued by our government, World of Power has taken the industry-leading decision to cease the sale of patio heaters, effective immediately.

The Negative Effects of Patio Heaters

First off, let's define the purpose of the patio heater. It's designed to heat the outside of your house. This is a ridiculous purpose, and it's unnecessarily wasteful to say the very least. World of Power couldn't in good conscience reconcile the need to sell these gas-guzzling items with their obvious and needless inefficiency.

Gas burning patio heaters emit shockingly high amounts of carbon dioxide. Average use over a period of six months will eject the same amount of CO2 as a gas hob. The difference is that patio heaters are not must-have items - they're large, expensive, uneconomical luxuries.

Patio heaters spew out around 50kg of carbon dioxide every year, and with the projected 2.3million patio heaters in use this year, the pollution is equivalent to 200,000 cars driving from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Perhaps the most wasteful aspect of patio heaters is that they're mainly used in July and August! In the frank words of Philip Selwood, Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust: "Why don't people just wear a jumper?!"

Alternative Sources of External Heat

If you're determined to have an exterior source of heat, there are some less hazardous options available. Characteristic and stylish, outdoor fireplaces can be less conspicuous than large, ugly patio heaters while acting as beautiful focal points for your patio environment. Creating warmth and light, outdoor fireplaces are compact, lightweight and far healthier for the environment too.

Another stylish and contemporary alternative to patio heaters are outback firepits. These firepits create a pleasant, warm atmosphere convivial to sociable evenings in the garden. On top of this, some of the firepits can double up as versatile little grills on which friends and family can enjoy roasted meats and mini barbeques.

In essence, it is possible to have the warmth and atmosphere created by patio heaters, without belching thick and hazardous CO2 into the environment. These alternatives are not only healthier; they look better, are more sociable and better value too!
