Autumn is a beautiful time of year for us here in England, full of rich, earthy colours, natural scents, reclusive wildlife and a sense of security and homeliness created by the darker evenings. The British autumn has provided the inspiration for generations of poets and artists, from Blake to Constable and beyond. But it’s not all romance and magic in autumn; there are some things which can drive any house- and garden-proud Englishman around the bend: leaves.
At this time of year, you probably return home from work at gloaming and tut at the piles of leaves which have coalesced in the borders of your garden, and around your door, and think to yourself ‘I’ll get the broom out at the weekend and clear this all up’. And as soon as you do, freshly fallen leaves will start piling up again and you’ll be right back where you started. It doesn’t matter how pretty they are; autumn leaves can be a hassle. But if you’re a committed gardener, then you’re probably aware that by collecting these leaves together and composting them, you can make leafmould – which can be dug into your soil or spread as mulch to improve the condition of your garden. It’s like compost, but it conditions the soil rather than fertilises it.
Leafmould
By collecting and composting the autumn leaves that have fallen onto your property, you eliminate the need to find a way to deal with them. Collect them up and store them in large plastic bags, with holes pierced in the sides – or better yet in bespoke wire bins. Keep the leaves wet (though the British weather should take care of that) and try to keep them sheltered from the wind. When summer rolls around, you should have the perfect soil conditioner ready and waiting.
So how do you collect the leaves? Well, you can sweep them up, but you’ll probably end up scraping them all over you driveway and turning them to paste with your broom. And using the rake isn’t a good idea either; constant raking over grass will eventually destroy your garden. The answer? A leaf blower! By using a leaf blower, you can easily, quickly and comfortably collect all your leaves into a single pile ready for composting.
Garden Blowers
For autumn 2008, World of Power is offering a number of exceptional garden blowers and leaf vacs, both petrol powered and electrical. All of the major manufacturers are represented, each company offering leaf blowers of one type or other. For example, the Flymo Gardenvac 2200+ uses a powerful leaf blower, vacuum and a shredder too, which means that the leaves you collect are torn apart immediately, making their mulching process significantly faster. This leaf blower/garden vac was recently voted “Best Leaf Blower” on GMTV This Morning; it’s not exactly the most prestigious award but it’s better than nothing.
We also have petrol powered leaf blowers from luminaries like Partner and Stihl. We offer Warrior EB260V 26cc blower, which is handheld, as well as a number of Ryobi petrol leaf blowers, four stroke blowers from Makita, and handheld blower-vacs from Husqvarna.
In no time at all, your garden and driveway will be totally free of leaves and debris, and you’ll be on your way to having a healthier garden than ever before, thanks to your new, autumn leaf blower. For some reason, they’re fun to use too. And that matters.
