Power Up with Briggs & Stratton

Briggs & Stratton is one of the biggest names in Powered Garden Tools. Dating back to 1908, they are the world’s largest producer of air-cooled engines for outdoor power equipment. In terms of the garden, they produce lawn mowers, tillers, chippers, leaf blowers, vacuums, pressure washers, air compressors, water pumps and more. Stylish, reliable and powerful, and with over 100 years experience behind them, they’re a great option for the vast majority of your gardening needs.

Mowers

There are two kinds of mowers you can use on your lawn. Walk-behind mowers are, as they sound, mowers that you can push around the garden and walk behind. Rider mowers are units that you can sit atop of and drive. Both have different engine specifications and are tailored to perform in different gardens and on different terrain. You should also consider some of the following when deciding which mower to buy:

  • How big your garden is – the larger the garden, the more powerful the mower will need to be.
  • Terrain/Environment – if there is a lot of thick grass and hilly terrain, look for higher engine ratings. If there are areas without grass, and the climate is heated, look for air and fuel filters.
  • Frequency of use – look for ease of access; something you might get with a less powerful mower.

Walk-behind Mowers

Briggs & Stratton Walk-Behind Mowers typically use an engine that is from 4.50 to 8.75 gross torque. Torque is defined by how powerful the twist motion is. This is obviously a more suitable method of measurement for an engine the size of a walk-behind mower’s.

The engine and mower configuration are closely related to each other. Mower configuration determines what size engine will be best suited to the job. Push and side discharge walk-behind mowers require much less power and so operate well with light-duty side valve engines. Slightly larger rear bagger and self-propelled mowers require a little more power and would benefit greatly from a larger OHV (Overhead Valve) engine. OHV Engines are also better for the environment, as they burn fuel more efficiently.

Rider Mowers

Rider Mowers have Briggs & Stratton engines that are typically from 10.5 to 26.0 gross horsepower. Horsepower is defined by the rate in which the engine is working overtime. In Rider Mower engines, power is distributed to the cutting blades, hydraulics, transmission and wheels. The term CC (Cubic Centimetres) is also a measure of engine size and relates to the engine’s volume.

The mower configuration of rider mowers with smaller decks and gear-based transmissions require less power than those with hydraulic drive trains or larger decks. The smaller deck rider movers will function perfectly with single-cylinder engines, whereas the larger ones need V-twin engines. These not only burn fuel in a more economic way, but are quieter than single-cylinder engines and reduce vibration.

Power up your Performance

Briggs & Stratton offer many engine features that can ensure you are getting the absolute utmost out of your powered garden tools. Walk-behind mower engines can use Briggs & Stratton’s trademark ReadyStart feature, which – as it sounds – ensures the engine is always ready to go. Higher torque and horsepower ratings are always helpful power ups too. It should be noted that with additional features and enhancements come greater prices, but why not try out a Briggs & Stratton Lo-Tone Muffler for your walk-behind mower, or advanced debris management systems for your rider mower? You’ll feel the difference, and the quality is worth the price.

The Briggs & Stratton Label

Some brands that proudly bear the Briggs & Stratton label are McCulloch, Rover, Tuffcut, Hayter & Husqvarna, to name a few. Such widespread trust in an engine-based company is representative of Briggs & Stratton’s outstanding dedication to quality. Look for the diamond label when purchasing your powered garden equipment and buy with confidence.
