Rechargeable lithium ion (li-ion) batteries are now widely used for everything from portable electronics to electric vehicles, power tools and garden machinery. Battery technology has advanced significantly over the past two decades with lithium ion replacing the previous generation of nickel–cadmium (NiCad) and nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. One of the key advantages of the li-ion technology is that the batteries are more ‘energy dense’ which allows greater power and capacities from a smaller pack.

This technology has been developed over many years by Makita to perfect their cordless power tool and garden machinery range. Offering many benefits to the user, these batteries make machines much lighter and easier to use - lithium-ion is around 40% lighter than NiCad batteries making machine more comfortable with improved handling and reduced user fatigue during use. The advantage these machines have over their petrol counterpart is they take away the need to store fuels or mix fuel / oil mix to the correct ratios and saves ££ over the years as there is no need to buy expensive fuels / oil*. These machines have been designed to rival the power levels of a petrol machine meaning you can have all the benefits of battery technology without sacrificing on power. When it comes to electric machinery you can be restricted by the length of the power cable meaning you always need to be in reach of a power source, these batteries allow you to work anywhere at any time without restrictions (when they battery has charge of course).

When it comes to li-ion batteries they can be stored for periods of time when not in use without the battery discharging meaning the battery is always ready to use, even when it has not been used for any amount of time. These batteries also do not have a ‘memory effect’ meaning they can be charged at any point, there is no need to discharge the battery completely before recharge – simply top up as and when you please to ensure your battery is always at full capacity ready to use when you are.

The energy density of li-ion allows significantly longer run times whilst achieving faster charge times when using the Makita intelligent charging system which has created industry leading charge times. This saves time on site as the user will be able to work for longer before stopping to change or charge the battery and even when you do need to stop to charge you will quickly be ready to get working once again.

The BL1830 18v lithium ion 3amp battery can be fully charged in as little as 22 minutes! This unbeatable charge time ensures you can get back to work without delay – 22 minutes will give you about enough time to make a hot drink and relax whilst you drink it!

Makita’s lithium-ion batteries and cordless tools also include technology that allows the machine, battery and charger to communicate, to maximise the life of the product and provide protection against damage. For example, Makita chargers are designed to deliver the optimum charge every time by intelligently balancing the recharge across all cells. Makita’s cordless tools are equipped with a tool/battery protection system, which automatically stops the tool under conditions that may damage the life of the machine and battery. The overload protection feature will automatically stop the tool when operated in a way which causes it to draw an abnormally high current whilst the thermal protection will stop the tool if it begins to overheat during use reaching temperatures which would cause damage to the tool and/or battery. Makita also boasts over-discharge protection which will stop the tool when the battery capacity gets too low to prevent the battery being over discharged as this can cause damage to the cells and shorten the lift of the battery.

When choosing Makita you are choosing tools which feature innovations which will enhance the user experience and help you work easier, faster and safer.
